My job is super-fast paced, no two days are the same, and sometimes, I literally have to RUN to get things done. Therefore, I have to be prepared for literally anything—even when I’m not physically at work in my office. My truth: no matter where I am, I’m probably working.
Example: I was out at a birthday dinner last weekend after work and due to an emergency, I had to get out my laptop and phone and problem solve for about 10 minutes at the dinner table. It’s fine, my friends understood.
I work best under pressure and high stakes, is that weird? I work in an office, most of the time, but I’m on the go, go, go! Here’s some tips, tricks, and essentials that help me make it through my fast-paced work day.
Carrying the right work bag for you is essential. One, it’s professional, two, it’s the carryall for any drama the day brings. For me, I need a bag with compartments and pockets for everything. I need pockets for my pockets. I carry the Tory Burch Robinson Tote in Black/Royal Navy. I LOVE IT. I can literally fit everything I need for a crazy work day in this bag, and it’s all organized just right. (I linked the bag above!). In my young, humble, and professional opinion, your work bag, again depending on your job, should be quality leather, structured, and a neutral color.
This tote seems to sell out often, because it’s amazing, so another work bag I recommend is the Legend Tote by Dagne Dover.
2. Be prepared
So, what exactly is in that large work bag that weighs 500 pounds?
Being prepared is actually a skill. Be the woman who when someone asks, “does anyone have an extra pen?’ You’ve got five for them to choose from. Seriously, it pays off. Here’s what’s in my bag that helps me make it through a work day on the go, whether I’m in the office or “out in the field.”
Laptop and charger
iPhone, charger, and a portable charger in case you don’t have access to an outlet
Agenda (yes, I still use an agenda for literally anything from planning dinner recipes to work meetings)
Mini Lint Roller
Umbrella x’s two if you can fit it, it’s always thoughtful and memorable when you can offer a co-worker an umbrella when they may have forgot one
PEPPER SPRAY (this is a MUST) and yes, mine is pink
Wallet, ID, Passport, you never know
Sunscreen, seriously, I might end up outside standing in the sun for 30 minutes and I’m not trying to get wrinkles here
Lip Balm and Lip Gloss
Comfy but professional flats (for those times you just have to run!)
Business cards IN A BUSINESS CARD HOLDER. There’s nothing worse than fumbling around in your bag for a business card when you’re trying to network. Keep it organized and put your business cards in a nice business card holder. I recommend the Kate Spade down to business card holder.
Pens. Extra pens. In blue and black.
Headphones: No, not for music. In case you are out of the office and have a spontaneous conference call. This GREAT advice someone gave me last year.
Water Bottle/Coffee Tumbler
Did I forget anything?! Comment and let me know what you always keep in your work bag!
3. Be prepared part two: Extra items to keep in your office
Yes, for the things you can’t fit in your work bag.
Extra Blouse: YES. I have spilled coffee on myself right before a big meeting and I learned to always have an extra blouse in the office.
Heels: You know in case of an emergency and one of those stupid tips of your heels pop off. THE WORST.
Hair and make-up supplies, you never know who might show up or when you might go on need to go on camera and need a touch up!
Snacks and water: Rarely do I have time for lunch.
These are the ONLY work pants I will EVER wear. Seriously…these are the pants of all pants! They are comfy, structured, professional, and look great with flats or heels. These are a staple. I’m not kidding, I have them in every color and 5 black pair because these pants are just that amazing—the quality is amazing too.
5. The Attitude
No one likes Debbie Downer and Negative Nancy.
I’m a passionate person—so I’m known to have a bold attitude sometimes, but I’m still learning to find the balance between being bold while simultaneously having a quiet and gentle spirit. But, what I have leaned is that NO ONE likes Debbie Downer and Negative Nancy.
Leave your bad attitude and drama at home, don’t bring it to the workplace. Don’t partake in the office gossip. One—you just shouldn’t, two that’s time wasted you could use to slay. Be a LIGHT in your workplace. Get to know your co-workers in a professional and respectful way. People will respect you, trust you, and strive to be a light too.
Now, I’d love to know your essentials that help you get through your work day, no matter your occupation. Comment below and let’s chat! (:
